Madeleine Shaw and Suzanne Siemens are the co-founders of Lunapads International Ltd., an East Vancouver-based company that specializes in sustainable alternatives to disposable feminine hygiene products. Lunapads products are used by women in over 40 countries worldwide. Thanks to their choices, over 1 million disposable pads and tampons are diverted from landfills every month.
From its early beginnings in 1993, Lunapads has embraced a mission-based business practice by providing greener and more body-positive products for women. Lunapads is also home to Pads4Girls, an in-house program that supports education for girls in developing nations. In January 2012 Madeleine and Suzanne traveled to Uganda to learn more about the relationship between hygiene and education for girls, as well as to explore the potential for padmaking as a social enterprise opportunity.
In June 2011 BCBusiness magazine named Lunapads as one of the top 20 most innovative companies in the province, and in October 2011 Lunapads was named Green Business of the Year by the Lower Mainland Better Business Bureau.
